What is the "Train Your Human" training philosophy?
At Train Your Human, we believe that better dogs start with better-trained humans. Many behavioral issues stem from a lack of clear communication between the dog and the owner. Our approach goes beyond just training the dog; we focus on coaching you to become a confident leader and capable handler. Read more about Our Story and how we empower owners.
What dog training methods do you use?
We use a balanced dog training approach informed by modern science and technology. This means we combine positive reinforcement with fair, structured corrections when necessary. Our goal is to build mutual trust and respect, utilizing tools and techniques that ensure clear communication so your dog learns lasting habits.
Do I need to be present for the training sessions?
Yes! Because our philosophy relies on teaching you how to communicate with your dog, your participation is essential. Our private lessons are designed to give you the hands-on skills needed to maintain your dog’s obedience long after the sessions end.
Where are you located?
We are proudly based in Colorado Springs, CO, located at 2819 Gomer Avenue. We serve dogs and owners throughout the local area.
Do you work with rescue dogs?
Absolutely. Owner and head trainer Kelly Huddleston began his training journey by rehabilitating his own rescue dog, Titan Rex. We have extensive experience working with rescue pups of all breeds and backgrounds to help them overcome fear, build stability, and thrive in their forever homes.
When should I start training my puppy?
You should start structured training when your puppy is between 3 to 6 months old. Early training prevents unwanted problem behaviors from taking root. Our Puppy PreSchool focuses on socialization, confidence building, crate training, and foundational obedience.
How much do dog obedience training packages cost?
We offer three tiers of obedience packages to fit your goals:
- Basic Obedience: $900 for 6 lessons
- Intermediate Obedience: $1,800 for 12 lessons
- Advanced Obedience: $2,700 for 18 lessons
What commands will my dog learn in Basic Obedience?
In our Basic Obedience program, your dog will master essential everyday skills, including their name, sit, down, place, recall (coming when called), and loose leash walking.
Do you train aggressive or reactive dogs?
Yes, we offer specialized training for dogs displaying aggression or reactivity. Our Behavior Modification program ($1,600 for 8 lessons) safely addresses the root causes of aggressive behavior, teaches impulse control, and builds alternative, reliable responses.
Do you use E-collars in your training?
Yes, we introduce E-collar training in our Intermediate Obedience and advanced programs. We do not jump straight to E-collars; instead, we first build a strong foundation with leash and collar. The E-collar is then layered in as a communication tool to provide clarity and allow for reliable off-leash freedom.
Can my dog get their AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification?
Yes! Our obedience courses prepare handlers and dogs for AKC-accredited testing. Basic Obedience prepares you for the standard CGC test, Intermediate prepares you for CGCA and CGCU, and Advanced Obedience prepares qualified teams for the Public Access Test (PAT). Testing is available for an additional $50.
Can you train my dog to be a service dog?
Yes, we offer Service Dog Training for handlers seeking dependable, task-trained dogs for public environments. We focus on alert behaviors, specific task training, and public access testing. Note: Not every dog is suited for service work, and an evaluation is required.
What are the prerequisites for Agility Training?
To enroll in our Agility Training, your dog must have completed Basic Obedience or equivalent foundational training. Agility requires dogs to follow clear cues and commands off-leash or on long lines while navigating obstacles.
Do you offer protection dog training?
We do. Our Protection Sport Training is designed for handlers pursuing sport disciplines like French Ring or Mondioring. This is advanced, high-level training that requires dogs to have an advanced obedience foundation and owners to demonstrate strict discipline and safety awareness.
What equipment do I need for dog training classes?
While starter gear like slip leads may be provided depending on the class, we generally require owners to bring a 5 ft leash, a 15 ft non-retractable leash, high-value dog food/treats, a clip-on treat pouch, a training collar, poop bags, and a water bowl.
How do I know which training program is right for my dog?
If you aren’t sure where to begin—whether your dog needs basic manners, behavioral intervention, or sport-level work—the best first step is to call us for an evaluation. We will assess your dog’s current skill level and discuss your specific goals to recommend the perfect fit.
